Traditionally Ketamine has been used as a sedative and for anesthesia. Discovered in 1962, Ketamine was first used in humans in the mid-’60s. Since that time, it was mostly reserved for the use of emergency room physicians, anesthesiologists, and critical care physicians in the hospital setting. Most recently, Ketamine was found to have a profound beneficial effect on patients with chronic pain, depression, and PTSD. The advantage found with Ketamine is that it works immediately after the infusion is completed in about 70% to 80% of patients with a depressive state. With a different set of diagnoses to treat, Ketamine infusion clinics had become a reality, and outpatient infusion protocols were developed to help patients keep depression at bay.
