Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The air we usually breathe is only about 21% oxygen. However, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy surrounds patients with 100% pressurized oxygen. If you suffer from an acute or chronic medical condition that is causing a significant amount of pain, discomfort, or inflammation, HBOT is very likely to help your situation a great deal.

-Decreases swelling and inflammation
-Promotes tissue recovery
-Accelerates cellular renewal

With higher concentration oxygen provided by HBOT under pressure, oxygen will dissolve in high amounts in all tissues and organs in your body. Overall, this promotes healing, recovery, and rejuvenation.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Benefits

- Accelerates cellular renewal
- Promotes tissue recovery
- Supports the generation of new blood vessels (a process called angiogenesis)
- Decreases inflammation and edema (swelling)
- Helps elimination and metabolism of toxins and stimulates production of collagen
- Modulates the immune system and helps the body fight infections

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for Pain Management

HBOT has demonstrated to have significant effects at the level of central and peripheral nervous systems. HBOT increases cell metabolism, reduces apoptosis, alleviates oxidative stress, increases neurotrophin and nitric oxide levels by enhancing mitochondrial function in neurons and glial cells, and it may even promote neurogenesis of endogenous neural stem cells. HBOT-induced neuroplasticity also leads to the repair of chronically impaired brain functions in traumatic brain injury as an example. The analgesic effects of HBOT have been studied in nociceptive, in inflammatory and neuropathic pain models, and may be useful for the treatment of various chronic pain syndromes. Based on this information, Indy Vital has created a protocol for the use of HBOT in chronic pain syndromes. We recommend HBOT comprised of 20 sessions,3d/w, 90 min, 100% oxygen at 2.5ATA as tolerated.

Indy Athletic Room

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for Athletes

Indy Vital is equipped with hyperbaric oxygen chambers that are available for professional and non-professional athletes. We understand how important it is for athletes to recover quickly to be able to achieve their best performance. There has been a resurgence in the interest in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy application in sports, especially in the NFL, in the last five years.

The reason hyperbaric oxygen therapy works for athletes is that oxygen naturally plays a crucial role in recovery from injury and physiological fatigue. By performing HBOT treatment, more oxygen is dissolved in the plasma, increasing the oxygen reaching the peripheral tissues. Therefore, HBOT improves recovery from injury and fatigue. Also, HBOT treatment has been reported to reduce post-injury swelling in humans. With HBOT tissue remodeling happens after injury showing accelerated recovery.

Furthermore, HBOT treatment has effectively increased recovery from fatigue. At the Nagano Winter Olympics, the effects of HBOT were terrific, where sports players experiencing fatigue were successfully treated with HBOT, enabling the players to continue performing in the games.

In the NFL, athletes who suffer an injury related to the game or training may incur a devastating blow to their career. It is prevalent that these athletes injure and re-injure certain areas that could become very difficult to heal. Because elite athletes have so much at stake, many have opted to use hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It is common knowledge between athletes in the professional leagues, that the use of a hyperbaric chamber reduces swelling, promotes healing of wounds, helps fight off dangerous infections.

With that in mind, we are very excited to inform you do not need to be an NFL athlete to have your hyperbaric oxygen therapy. If you’re interested in improving your exercise and training capacity as well as recover fast from athletic activity, please contact us for additional information.

All chambers are designed, manufactured, tested and installed in accordance with the current regulations of the FDA, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME/PVHO-2) Codes, The Pressure Equipment Directive (CE Mark), Medical Device Directive (CE Mark) and the requirements of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). Our Sigma 34 Perry chambers are FDA approved and certified to ISO 13485:2003. Also, all of the equipment involved in the treatment we use in HBOT was designed and manufactured in the USA. Safety is a priority at our medical facility. We want to ensure you have a pleasant experience while beginning a healing journey with us.

What is the experience like inside the Sigma 34 Chambers?

From the inside of one of our Sigma 34 chambers, the patient has an unblocked visual field of the treatment room provided by the clear acrylic that encloses the pressured chamber. The clear acrylic also allows the patient to be able to see and continuously interact with the staff at all times, while the team and the physician are regularly monitoring the patient during treatment. Our chambers may accommodate patients weighing up to 500 lbs. comfortably. All chambers have a video entertainment system and a superior voice communication system to ensure uninterrupted communication with the patient inside the chamber.

Why choose Indy Vital for your HBOT?

Indy Vital is the only free-standing hyperbaric oxygen therapy facility in Indianapolis. We offer the same kind of HBOT treatment provided by the local hospitals in the community.

What are the advantages of having your HBOT at Indy Vital rather than in a local hospital?

- At Indy Vital, we will start your HBOT therapy without delays. Because we are an office-based practice, inherited delays are minimized. At our facility, as soon as you complete your initial assessment with one of our board-certified physicians and payment plan is in place, HBOT is initiated. In contrary, if you choose a hospital facility for your HBOT, delays in starting therapy are very common. Choosing a hospital versus a free-standing facility like ours could potentially delay your start on HBOT.

- Reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections at Indy Vital compared to your local hospital — it is common knowledge in the medical community that the least time the patient spends in a hospital, the lower the chances of contracting a hospital acquired infection. At Indy Vital, we are not a hospital and operate mostly as a doctor’s office facility. With that in mind, your chances of acquiring a severe infection are low while receiving HBOT with us. Avoiding the hospital will nearly eliminate the risk of exposure to all the dangerous bacteria and germs that a local hospital facility may carry.

- At Indy Vital, we have a very comfortable waiting room area, but our goal is for you to stay there for the least time possible. We had design protocols to avoid patients waiting to get on the HBOT chambers. Waiting times are much shorter at Indy Vital. Have you tried to get anything done at the hospital, lab work, for example? It takes hours of waiting time. At Indy Vital, we are extremity organize on scheduling patients, and we recognize your precious time is valuable.

- Lower cost of your HBOT at Indy Vital. Our treatment fees will cost you much less than if you were to use your local hospital facility. In average, a hospital facility would charge you and your insurance 4X higher the amount for HBOT therapy when compared to a satellite facility like ours. Even if your health insurance company pays for most the cost of the treatment, carefully examine your situation since a more expensive treatment at the hospital may represent a higher co-payment to you.

How much will my HBOT therapy cost?

At Indy Vital, the treatment cost varies depending on how your HBOT treatment prescription. The number of hours for each session of HBOT and the frequency of treatments will play an essential role in the final cost of your treatment plan with us. We occasionally offer special discounts and will guide you in finding a financial institution to help you affordably receive HBOT therapy.

What kind of conditions are treated using HBOT at Indy Vital?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, also known as HBOT, has been used for over 50 years and is used in the United States and abroad in the treatment of several conditions including neurological diseases, disorders in the spectrum of autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, radiation therapy injury, chronic pain, autoimmune diseases, and acute-chronic infections. Most recently, there has been an explosion of hospitals across the country, acquiring the HBOT technology to treat severely infected wounds. The problem is that most hospital facilities are limited on a few sets of diagnosis that they treat, usually limiting themselves to conditions that are reimbursed by private insurances and government insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid. At Indy Vital, we accommodate all patients who need HBOT, regardless of their insurance status. If you don’t have a diagnosis that is not covered by your insurance company, we will work with you by private payment, and if you have difficulties in affording the treatment, we will provide you with financing options.

How long and how many HBOT treatments will I receive at Indy Vital?

HBOT is usually provided by having the patient going inside a pressurized chamber where 100% oxygen is delivered for a period of 1 to 3 hours at a time. Often, patients undergo 20 to 40 sessions of treatment. HBOT accelerates cellular renewal, promotes tissue recovery, supports the generation of new blood vessels (a process called angiogenesis), decreases inflammation and edema (swelling), helps the elimination and metabolism of toxins and stimulates the production of collagen. The use of pressurized 100% oxygen also modulates the immune system and helps the human body fight infections.

Does Indy Vital treat Neurological Diseases with HBOT?

Neurological diseases are a great indication for HBOT. Conditions such as Alzheimer’s Dementia, Vascular Dementia, Traumatic brain injury, Cerebrovascular accident (stroke), Intractable Migraine headaches Cluster headaches, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Regional sympathetic dystrophy, Peripheral neuropathy, and sudden deafness Musculoskeletal conditions: rheumatoid arthritis chronic arthritis with inflammation and painful fibromyalgia.

Does Indy Vital treat Auto-Immune Disease with HBOT?

Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), lupus systemic.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Side Effects

- Temporary nearsightedness (myopia) caused by temporary eye lens changes.
- Middle ear injuries, including leaking fluid due to increased air pressure.
- Lung collapse caused by air pressure changes.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for ED

At Indy Vital we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of severe ED. HBOT can induce angiogenesis and recover erectile function. A recent NIH study published in November 2018, indicated that after daily HBOT, erectile function improved by 88% and 80% of patients reported a positive outcome according to a post treatment GEQ (global efficacy question). In the same study perfusion MRI imaging of the penis was performed before and after HBOT sessions, revealing increase perfusion of the penis by 153%. The conclusion of these important study was that  HBOT reverses the basic common pathophysiology, atherosclerosis and decreased penile perfusion, responsible for most cases of ED.(Int J Impot Res. 2018 Nov;30(6):292-299).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – Conditions Treated

Neurological Disorders

HBOT can help with conditions such as Alzheimer’s Dementia, Vascular Dementia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebrovascular Accident (stroke), Intractable Migraine Headaches, Cluster Headaches, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Regional Sympathetic Dystrophy, Peripheral Neuropathy, and sudden Deafness.

Musculoskeletal Conditions

HBOT can help treat rheumatoid arthritis, chronic arthritis with inflammation, and fibromyalgia.

HBOT benefits children with autism by causing an increase in cerebral perfusion during treatment. Treatment also improves mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as up-regulate the production of antioxidant enzymes.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

HBOT decreases the severity of symptoms and increases the quality of life of patients diagnosed.

Radiation Therapy Injuries

HBOT is indicated in the treatment of radiation injuries caused by radiation therapy received during the treatment of cancer. Patients who suffer from radiation cystitis, radiation proctitis, radiation enteritis may benefit from the use of HBOT. Other radiation injuries such as osteonecrosis of the jaw bone respond very well to HBOT. Also, in the treatment of breast cancer, radiation tissue injury after a mastectomy may develop. HBOT can help heal skin grafts and soft tissues that are injured during breast cancer treatment. Occasionally, after radiation of the brain, there are noticeable changes in personality. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help personality changes, memory loss, and language difficulties after brain radiation.

Chronic Pain

HBOT helps individuals suffering from chronic pain by reducing pain and tenderness, reducing inflammation, fighting infection and creating new blood vessels.

Auto-Immune Diseases

HBOT can help with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Systemic Lupus.

Acute Chronic Infections

HBOT will treat infections by promoting hyper oxygenation. The increased amount of oxygen in infected tissues will promote vasoconstriction, the formation of new blood vessels, and the recruitment of white cells and stem cells to affected areas.

Plastic Surgery

Patients who undergo plastic surgery greatly benefit from HBOT. The use of hyperbaric oxygen may significantly reduce the side effects and accelerate healing after a plastic surgery intervention. There is also the advantage of a lower risk of infection if HBOT is utilized before and after plastic surgery. Indy vital has a protocol that delivers HBOT before and after plastic surgery.

Central retinal artery occlusion is very much like a “stroke” involving the eye. Symptoms include a sudden loss of vision and red lesions in the retina called cherry-red spots. If you develop this condition, HBOT may save your vision.

The most common Indication for HBOT is the development of a bone infection called osteomyelitis. The reason HBOT be so effective in the treatment of this kind of infection is due to an increase in oxygen concentration at the level of bone tissue. At Indy Vital, we also treat diabetic foot ulcers using HBOT. Other chronic infections such as Lyme disease also benefit from the use of HBOT. Gas gangrene, necrotizing flesh-eating bacteria, and non-healing wounds are also common indications of HBOT.

Hematologic Conditions

Refractory severe anemia may be treated with HBOT.

Ear, Nose and Throat Conditions

Sudden hearing loss may be caused by a condition called Sensorineural Hearing Loss. HBOT is indicated in the treatment of idiopathic sudden hearing loss caused by nerve damage to the auditory nerve. While receiving HBOT, the increase in blood flow and oxygen to the inner ear where the auditory nerve is located may reverse the hearing loss.

If you suffer injury by a terminal burn, CVA damage to the skin and sometimes to the mucosa may cause significant pain and may harbor terrible infections. HBOT definitely can accelerate healing and decrease pain associated with burns.
